A good Halloween night in Tokyo starts with choosing the evening you actually want: dinner and cocktails, a costume party, or a club with a VIP table. The neighbourhood matters, but so does having somewhere confirmed to go when the streets get busy.
I’m Renaud, founder of Japan BTO. I’ve lived in Tokyo since 2007, with a background in bartending, nightlife and VIP hospitality. My advice for Halloween is simple: book the important parts in advance, choose a district that suits your group and leave a little flexibility between stops.
From Shibuya towards Shinjuku: how the atmosphere has changed
Renaud’s local perspective: in recent years, I’ve seen some of Tokyo’s Halloween nightlife shift from Shibuya towards Shinjuku, especially Kabukicho. The image of everyone gathering around Shibuya Crossing no longer tells the whole story. Shinjuku has become a bigger part of the night, with its bars, clubs and costumed visitors.
That does not mean Shibuya has stopped celebrating, or that Shinjuku is a place where anything goes. Both have busy nightlife venues and rules for public spaces. I would build the evening around places where you can enjoy yourself inside, rather than make a street gathering the main plan.
Where to spend Halloween in Tokyo
Shinjuku and Kabukicho: plenty of ways to shape the night
Shinjuku works well for a dinner followed by cocktails, a lively bar or a club. Kabukicho’s neon streets add to the atmosphere, but choose your venues before setting out. Staying in one area gives you more time to enjoy the night and less time navigating crowds between trains.
Golden Gai can suit a quiet drink in a tiny bar, depending on the group and available seats. It is less practical for a large group looking to arrive together without a booking. Check cover charges and house rules, and do not feel obliged to follow someone inviting you into a venue from the street.
Shibuya: choose a venue, not just the crossing
Shibuya still has bars, clubs and places to celebrate Halloween. My recommendation is to choose an organised party or a venue that suits your music and atmosphere, then check its entry conditions. Old videos of huge street crowds are not a reliable plan for your evening.
Arrange a meeting point away from the busiest station exits, allow extra walking time and follow staff and police directions. The local restrictions below matter even if you only intend to pass through on the way to dinner or a club.
Roppongi: dinner, cocktails and a VIP club finish
Roppongi can suit a more dressed-up start, an international atmosphere and a later club finish. A restaurant, a cocktail lounge and a club are different experiences, so choose the format that fits your group rather than relying on the word Halloween on a flyer.
For a VIP evening, confirm the table, group size, budget and entry requirements in advance. A costume does not automatically override a venue’s rules on footwear, masks or large accessories.
Restaurants and VIP tables: book in advance
For a planned Halloween evening, restaurant tables and VIP areas need to be reserved in advance. Get in touch as soon as your date and group size are known, especially if you have a particular restaurant or club in mind. Do not leave these arrangements until the same evening.
For a restaurant, confirm the time, number of guests, menu or dietary needs, and cancellation conditions. For a VIP table, check the minimum spend or package, what is included, any additional charges, arrival time and the venue’s entry rules. Availability and conditions must be confirmed for your date.
Booking a guide is not, by itself, confirmation of a restaurant reservation or VIP table. Tell me which arrangements you want when enquiring so that we can check them in advance. Food, drinks, venue charges, transport and optional VIP arrangements are paid separately from the nightlife tour.
Halloween 2026: the street rules to know
- Shibuya: drinking alcohol in streets, parks and other public spaces within the designated area around Shibuya Station is prohibited every day from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m., throughout the year. It is not only a Halloween rule. See the official Shibuya rules and area map.
- Shinjuku and Kabukicho: for Halloween 2026, street drinking is prohibited in designated parts of Shinjuku 3-chome and Kabukicho 1-chome from 5 p.m. on October 31 to 5 a.m. on November 1. Check the official Halloween 2026 notice and map.
- Getting around Shibuya: vehicle traffic measures are planned around the station from the evening of October 30 to the early morning of November 1, 2026. They can affect taxi routes and pick-up points. This does not mean the whole neighbourhood is closed to pedestrians. See the police traffic notice.
My practical tip: enjoy your drinks inside the bar, restaurant or club, and finish them before leaving. Keep your group out of doorways and pedestrian routes, take your rubbish with you and follow directions from security staff. Check the official notices again shortly before your evening.
Costumes, footwear and identification
Ask the venue about masks, face coverings, large props and footwear before choosing your costume. Keep your vision clear and avoid accessories that make stairs, escalators or crowded trains difficult. A change of shoes is easier to plan before going out than at a club entrance.
Bring an original photo ID accepted by the venue; do not assume a photo on your phone will be enough. Japan’s legal drinking age is 20, and clubs may check identification even when a table has been reserved. For more practical outfit advice, see my Tokyo nightlife dress-code guide.
Ask before photographing other people’s costumes and carry a little cash alongside your card. Small bars, lockers and venue charges do not always work the same way.
A simple Halloween evening I would suggest
- Start with a reserved dinner. Eat properly, settle into the evening and meet the whole group without searching for a table.
- Continue with a nearby bar or cocktail stop. Choose it for the atmosphere and leave enough time to reach the next venue.
- Finish at a club or confirmed VIP table. Respect the agreed arrival time and keep your ID ready. If the group prefers a quieter evening, stay with bars instead.
This is a suggested structure, not a promise of a specific venue. We adapt it to your date, preferences, budget and confirmed availability.
Plan the journey back before the night starts
Tokyo’s rail network does not run throughout the night. Check the last train for your actual route, including connections, and allow time to leave the venue and reach the platform. If you plan to stay out until morning, make that a deliberate choice.
A taxi is another option, but busy streets, road restrictions and demand can make pick-up less straightforward. Agree on a sensible meeting point and include the journey home in your budget.
Plan your Halloween night with Renaud
For a private evening built around your group, discover the Tokyo VIP Private Nightlife Tour with a Local Insider. Send your date, group size, music preferences and venue budget, and tell me whether you want restaurant reservations or a VIP table. The earlier you enquire, the more time we have to check and confirm the arrangements.
The nightlife tour is for guests aged 20 and over, in English, French or Japanese, subject to guide availability. Restaurant and VIP bookings remain subject to each venue’s availability and conditions.
