For Christmas in Tokyo, choose one area for your evening: Shibuya for a lively city outing, Tokyo Midtown Garden in Roppongi for illuminations, or Odaiba for a walk beside Tokyo Bay. Add a meal nearby and leave time to enjoy the view. You do not need to cross the whole city to make the evening feel special.
2026 programme checked on 5 November. Midtown and Odaiba dates below are confirmed by their organisers; Shibuya Blue Cave’s 2026 programme is still awaiting confirmation on its official website.
The Fox’s Tip: my three Christmas choices
I’m Renaud, founder of Japan BTO. For Christmas, I like to recommend Shibuya’s illuminations, the garden at Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi, or Odaiba and the bay. Choose the atmosphere you want, then build the evening around it. A walk and a good dinner can be a lovely plan without a long list of stops.
Shibuya: lights and a lively evening
Choose Shibuya if you want to combine the city’s evening energy with shopping, dinner and a walk. Start around the station, keep your restaurant in the same area and decide how much walking you want before adding another neighbourhood.
Blue Cave 2026: not yet confirmed. The official Ao no Dokutsu Shibuya website still displays the completed 2025 edition. Do not use those dates to plan a 2026 visit. Check the new announcement before making the blue-light display the purpose of your evening.
My planning suggestion: keep Shibuya flexible until that announcement. If a confirmed illumination event is essential to your trip, choose Midtown on one of its announced dates. For a longer stay together, our three-day Tokyo itinerary for couples gives you a daytime framework.
Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi: a Christmas garden walk
MIDWINTER LIGHTS runs from 26 November to 25 December 2026, 17:00–23:00, in Midtown Garden, with free admission. These details come from Tokyo Midtown’s official 2026 announcement.
Address: Tokyo Midtown, 9-7-1 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo. This is the Roppongi location. The official access guide gives a direct connection from Roppongi Station’s Oedo Line exit 8.
Allow roughly 45–75 minutes for a leisurely look around and photos, then have dinner nearby. That is a suggested planning allowance, not an official visit duration. With children, leave room for a warm indoor break instead of adding several more outdoor stops.
Want a Christmas market too?
The separate Roppongi Hills Christmas Market takes place at O-Yane Plaza from 21 November to 25 December 2026, 11:00–21:00. It is an optional second stop in the Roppongi area; Midtown and Roppongi Hills are different complexes. Allow for the walk between them.
Odaiba: Christmas beside Tokyo Bay
Odaiba is my suggestion when the waterfront matters as much as the decorations. Plan a bay walk, a stop at the seaside deck and dinner with a view if that appeals. Bring a warm layer for the exposed waterfront and keep an indoor alternative for a windy or wet evening.
DECKS Tokyo Beach’s YAKEI illuminations run year-round on the 3F seaside deck, with Tokyo Bay and Rainbow Bridge as the backdrop. The published lighting hours are sunset to midnight, subject to seasonal changes.
Address: DECKS Tokyo Beach, 1-6-1 Daiba, Minato-ku, Tokyo. Its access page lists Odaiba-kaihinkoen Station on the Yurikamome and Tokyo Teleport Station on the Rinkai Line.
The four December fireworks evenings
The Odaiba Rainbow Fireworks 2026 are scheduled for 5, 12, 19 and 26 December at 19:00, lasting about five minutes. Severe weather can cancel a show. There is no 24 December performance in this programme.
On a fireworks date, arrive before the start and leave dinner until afterward. On other evenings, choose Odaiba for the bay itself. Avoid booking a meal across town immediately after the show: give yourself time to leave the waterfront and reach your restaurant.
How to plan Christmas Eve or Christmas Day
- Choose your main outing first. One district and a nearby meal make a manageable evening.
- Reserve the meal you care about. Confirm the menu, price, cancellation terms and any children’s options directly with the restaurant.
- Keep separate budgets. Food, drinks, transport and any paid activities are additional to a guided visit.
- Check your return route. Use your actual hotel and travel date; our Tokyo subway guide helps with the basics.

Plan a Christmas outing with Japan BTO
Tell us your date, hotel area, group size, children’s ages if relevant, and which of these three atmospheres you prefer through our contact page. We can discuss a suitable route and confirm guide availability, timing and price before you book.
For a daytime introduction to the city, see our private Tokyo walking tours. A family illumination outing needs its own agreed plan; our adult nightlife experience has different conditions. The recommendations above are places to consider, not guaranteed stops or a fixed Christmas package.
