Tokyo is a wonderful city to explore at your own pace. You can follow a side street, stay longer over lunch or change your plans when something catches your eye. You can also enjoy that freedom with a private guide who helps you find your bearings and shares the day with you.
I’m Renaud. For me, a good tour means discovering Tokyo, having a conversation and enjoying ourselves along the way. Cultural explanations matter, and so do the questions that come up between stops: which train to take tomorrow, where to spend an afternoon or how to prepare a reservation for the next part of your trip.
A friendly guide you can talk to
During our visit, feel free to ask whatever comes to mind. How do you use public transport? How do you find your way through a large station? What should you consider when reserving a Shinkansen seat or booking an attraction? I can share practical advice and help you understand the next steps so you feel more comfortable during your stay.
We can also talk about the days ahead: neighbourhoods to explore, restaurants to try, visits that fit well together and places that match your interests. Tell me what you already have planned, what you are curious about and how much energy you want to spend getting around.
Above all, we are here to have a good time in Tokyo. A little side street, a coffee break, something new to taste or a conversation about everyday life in Japan can be part of the visit. The idea is to enjoy our time together and leave you with useful pointers for exploring at your own pace afterward.
Practical help that carries into the rest of your trip
- Getting around: practise reading the signs, choosing an exit and understanding a transfer while we use public transport together. You can also revisit our Tokyo subway guide later.
- Preparing a Shinkansen journey: talk through your route, the stations and the questions to check before reserving, then find the relevant train operator’s official booking information.
- Booking attractions: identify the official reservation channel, see whether you need a timed ticket and consider how the visit fits into your day. Tickets and available slots remain subject to the venue’s conditions.
- Planning other days: choose areas that work well together, leave room for meals and breaks, and find options that suit your interests, budget and pace.

Bring your questions and the plans you already have. We can discuss them during the tour and make the rest of the stay easier to organise, without trying to squeeze every place into our day together.
When exploring on your own makes sense
If you enjoy researching, using maps and deciding as you go, a self-guided day can be ideal. You set the start time, linger where you like and spend your budget on food, transport and the visits you choose. You do not need a guide every day to enjoy Tokyo.
Keep the plan manageable. One main neighbourhood and a nearby area leave more time to wander than a long list of stops across the city. Shopping streets, parks and cafés can be particularly enjoyable when you have no schedule to follow. The trade-off is that you handle the navigation, reservations and decisions yourself.
When a private guide adds the most
A guide can be especially useful near the beginning of a stay, when everything is still unfamiliar. Exploring together helps you understand how the city connects, discover what interests you and decide where you would like to return independently. Our first-day guide to Tokyo gives you a starting point.
It also helps when time is short or your group has different interests and walking preferences. We can choose a realistic route, make space for questions and take a break when needed. Let me know if you would enjoy more temples, local food, shopping, contemporary Tokyo or simply quieter streets. Those details help shape a day you will actually enjoy.
Compare the costs clearly
Exploring independently usually costs less upfront because there is no guiding fee. With a private tour, you are paying for the guide’s time, local knowledge and personal attention as well as the route. Think about whether that support would make the day more enjoyable for your group.
Japan BTO’s day tours use walking and public transport. The guide fee is separate from transport tickets, meals, drinks and attraction admission. See our private tour cost guide and the current options on the booking page.
The fox’s tip: start together, then explore your way
You can combine both approaches: a guided day early in your stay, followed by independent days with more confidence. Use our time together to ask questions, get practical tips and find places you want to explore further.
The aim is to enjoy Tokyo today and feel more at home in the city tomorrow.
Plan a day that feels like you
Tell me your dates, group size, interests, walking pace and any questions about the rest of your trip. For our Tokyo Private Tour: Temples, Culture & Modern City Highlights, availability and arrangements are confirmed personally before booking. You can also compare our tour durations to see how much time you would like to spend together.
